Taking a closer look at the natural world through macro-photography

I work as a doctor, but have an outside interest in animal behaviour in general, and perhaps insects in particular.  I live in Northern England; and most of the photographs on this site were taken in the Lake District, Silverdale, and Bowland, as well as my back garden.

This web site shows some of my more interesting photographs, which you can view by clicking on the links in the frame on the left.  I use a Canon 300D; with a 300mm f4.0 for bird photography, and 100mm f2.8 macro and MP-E 65mm f2.8 for macro photography.  With the exception of white balance and exposure, none of the photographs have been digitally altered.

Insects have a beauty which is hidden from us by their size, and I hope that some of the photographs reveal this to you.  Please keep them for private use, but do not use them commercially without contacting me.  I can provide them as a .tiff at 3000x2000 resolution.

I have tried to identify the subject and background in each case, but this has been difficult. If you can have any comments or suggestions then I would love to hear from you.

The web site is constantly updated as new photographs are added, and poorer ones are pruned.  If you like what you see then please also follow the links for some outstanding macro-photography from other people on the Internet.
